Gallup Clerk Alfred Abeita II Named “Clerk of the Year”
Alfred Abeita II, MMC Clerk for the City of Gallup, has been chosen “Clerk of the Year” by the New Mexico Clerks and Finance Officers Association. He was selected during the Clerks and Finance Officers Spring Meeting April 17 in Rio Rancho.
Abeita has been Clerk for Gallup since 2007. Prior to becoming City Clerk he held several different jobs within his career including Switchboard Operator, Computer Application specialist and Deputy City Clerk.
He received his MMC (Master Municipal Clerk) designation in January 2019 and received the Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) designation in May 2010. He is the first to have received his CMC for the City of Gallup.
Alfred's extra-curricular activities include his involvement in the Red Rock Balloon Rally, one of the largest hot air ballooning event in North America held annually in December in Gallup. Alfred has tirelessly volunteered for over 15 years to be ballooning official. He takes on the role of a Launch Director during this three-day event. He takes this job seriously to coordinate safe launching for balloon pilots and to handle crowd control in the freezing temperatures of Gallup's winter, helping with chase crews and with search and rescue to ensure each pilot and balloon is accounted for with each flight landing.
As part of his civic responsibilities, Alfred coordinates field trips with the local schools to engage the students in government. He is enthusiastic about providing tours of City Hall and other City facilities. He makes accommodations for the students to have meet-and-greet sessions with the Mayor and Council. He is a great host for the City because of his experience and knowledge and by being able to share time with the students. By staying involved in this effort he takes an active role in educating our youth on the inner workings and culture of municipal government. He informs students that they too could have a career in municipal government in their future.
In their nominating letter, Gallup Mayor Jackie McKinney wrote: “Alfred brings an exceptional work ethic, integrity and professionalism to his work.”
Other nominee for this year’s award were: Michael Anne Antonucci, Clerk/Treasurer for the City of Raton.
