Emergency Safety Tips
Tune in and Take Cover
Put safety first: tune into news broadcasts and take cover if necessary.
Take Care near Powerlines
When outside in severe weather, watch for tree hazards and downed powerlines — especially in the dark — and report emergencies to Utility Dispatch as soon as possible. Don't touch or move downed lines and treat all downed lines as energized and extremely dangerous. If powerlines fall on your vehicle while in it, stay in the car until emergency personnel can assist. The car can become energized.
Stay Out of Flooded Basements
Stay out of a flooded basement if water could be in contact with electrical outlets, appliances or cords. Never attempt to turn off power at the breaker box if you must stand in water to do so. Be aware of any electrical equipment that could be energized and in contact with water.
Don't Touch Wet Appliances
Never touch or use electrical appliances, cords or wires while you are wet or standing in water. Appliances that have been in contact with water should be checked by a professional before they are used. They may need to be repaired or replaced.
